I too was surprised when I saw this feature removed, I even posted here about it, but I understand that this choice makes explorer more consistent, meaning that the files should always be sorted according to a selected logical condition, which makes the whole thing more predictable, like when you are downloading files, they will always be sorted according to chosen method.

I like the fact that explorer constantly checks to make sure chosen sort is respected, but I guess they could have made a "no sort" mode that gives users full freedom over files, like what you are trying to do. I used to find this quite handy with programs that actually took into account custom sort (like windows image preview)

Well, you could keep a clean desktop and do the file renaming work there. Click a blank area on the desktop and scroll our mouse up and down to resize desktop icons on the fly. Windows maintains the ability to do what you are attempting to do, albeit in a more limited manner.

The odd thing is, I have always used my desktop for this type of work. When Win95 first came out, I was so thrilled to have a "desktop" that actually emulated the way I work outside of the PC.

You have encountered an issue in the Windows 7 GUI that differs greatly from previous versions, but you have not described an issue that justifies abandoning the OS. Of course, "going back to Vista" is less expensive.

OK this actually works pretty well and renames them nicely as well. But I'm still a bit miffed as to why they took the function out of the OS. I wonder how many other annoying niggles they have introduced.

I'm also very upset with this issue, it seems such a amateur mistake living this feature off. I like to arrange my movies in the order that I want to watch them or upload them to my iPod and it's been a pain, since none of the sort by stiles suits me.

I'm with you Jedi. This is a very basic function to remove and I can see no reason to have it removed other than minimal consultation with the user, eg. a Microsoft budget saver. I'll now have to rely on finding and using, hopefully virus free, third party software to complete tasks that XP could do. Thanks to those that have provided links for this purpose. BRING IT BACK Microsoft, don't restrict how we can or can't do something under the guise of making things easier, don't direct us to your business partners for solutions and don't alienate us loyal subjects when others are whispering in our ears to use Macs and Open Office etc.

I have just started using Windows 7 and have just hit the same problem - that I cannot manually drag and re order jpg files as I have done with XP, which is for me fairly important. I am not someone who has much in the way of computer skills, so I need the computer to be easy to use.

I have spent a bit of time on line on the Microsoft website looking for a solution, but can only find how to "tag" photos etc, which does not solve my problem.

At the moment I have had to go into the attic and find an 7 year old computer running XP at slug like speed and then actually have to move the pictures to the order I want them in on an external hard drive in XP!! It seems a bit silly!

Hi David,

Don't know if you've found a solution to this problem. If not give IrfanView a try. It's free and a part of the package is an application called IrfanView Thumbnails. Works just like explorer used to.
