cannot manually drag and reorder jpg files in explorer?

Hi. Just upgraded to 7 enterprise from vista ultimate and the first extremely basic operation I try to perform seems to have been taken away!!?

I want to drag jpg files around to re order them in the explorer view (with the ultimate goal of highlighting them all and renaming them so it renames them in numerical order in the new order I set them in! But it doesn't want to let me drag and re order them!? Am I being extremely stupid here or has this really been taken out of 7?

It appears that you can only do this on the desktop. Don't shoot the messenger.

    Or the piano player.

wow are you kidding. I thought I must be doing something wrong.

This is a huge issue already. I need the ability to move my photos around and rename them before uploading them to the web. This one seemingly small issue pretty much means I'm going back to vista. What a waste of a day setting this stupid thing up

There are a number of image management applications available that would address this need. I use Irfanview Thumbnails.

You have encountered an issue in the Windows 7 GUI that differs greatly from previous versions, but you have not described an issue that justifies abandoning the OS. Of course, "going back to Vista" is less expensive.

I understand you being annoyed by this, but it's nothing that can't be replaced by a software solution.

a good freeware file rename utility is ken rename : Ken's Program Space: Ken Rename V0.88

latest version is from august 2009, don't mind the 2008 in the url, and there is a portable version too, and I tested it on windows 7

you will be able to reorganise easily, launch the files to check out the picture and set rules for very flexible automated renaming.

If you really need the thumbnails, we can probably look at some explorer alternative

If your saying that you quit 7 over this issue then, what can we say further ?

Im just shocked and to be honest a bit pissed off that Windows latest attempt at creating a decent OS has fallen at the simplest of hurdles. That of basic file management. This is really something the OS should do itself rather than rely on 3rd party applications.

    JK

We all get used to doing things a specific way and changing that can be frustrating at first. There are work arounds and it isn't a major problem to most users. If it is important enough for you vista/xp might end up being better for you.

Hope you find what you are looking for

You say again like a 'work around' is acceptable. I got this software because I thought it was a significant step forwards for windows from Vista. Less than a day into using the new OS I don't expect to be looking for work arounds for the most basic of operations... thats all I'm trying to say.
