Windows 7: How to get data out of a defective HDD ?

It sounds like it is a logical failure of the drive rather than a mechanical one (you didn't mention any rattling/grinding noises and the drive could be read on another computer). Please read the article on this link before doing more harm to the drive.

I attached the disk again, and got what can be viewed in the attachment.
The disk has been found. It could not be initialized, and Testdisk is unable to see it.
BTW the disk also gives a mechanical sound.

I`m sorry , I couldn`t resist.

What other machine do you have it hooked up to ? A desktop I presume. You should be able to hold the drive in your hand and rotate your wrist and feel if it`s working.

Hi. Much easier, I hold it to my ear, and it's working

I have studied the HD Diagnostic, thank you.
But as it's a Toshiba drive, I seem not able to get diagnostic tool. Toshiba cannot identify the drive from it's S/N.
I have attached a dump to this reply, that shows info for the drive.
Can you help me further on ?

If you click the link for Toshiba it gives you a DOS CD scan ISO file to download, burn to CD using an image burner like Windows Image Burner or ImgBurn, then boot to run the full scan.
I cannot see any iso file, but 2 exe's ?

Try SeaTools for DOS | Seagate bootable CD scan which works on most makes.

Toshiba has been bought by Fujitsu which has replaced it's drive tests with their own, only available to run from Windows. You can try it if you want.

I would replace the HD. In the future keep your data backed up externally along with a Win7 backup image so you only need to boot the Win7 DVD or Repair CD to reimage replacement drive in 20 minutes.

When the new HD is installed you can run the factory Recovery disks you made or order from tech Support, or get a superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

I will do that too. I do the backup here, but my grandchild didn't do that. I think she has learned from this issue here .
Else I will tell her what to do.
I hoped, that I at least could get the preinstalled W7HP out of the HDD, but no luck.
TechSupport?, eMachines ?.

I want to thank all you nice people, that has helped me here. What an outstanding crew there is here

Everything you need to get the superior clean reinstall is in the blue link above. Be sure to ask back if you have any specific questions.

For the Recovery disks which include all the preinstalled factory bloatware, you'd need to contact eMachines Tech Support which is included for free for the first year. You can also compare their price on replacement HD with what you find on the web.
