run this tool to figure out whether your pc is capable Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor - Download - Microsoft Windows for basic users Home Premium is a good option, heres a comparison http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...oducts/compare
There is no OS installed on it at the moment. So I can't run it
Will the system run slower with home premium ?
The only stumbling block that will slow things down at this point is the amount of RAM. 2 Gig's would be much better. Another thing-running the advisor is really important if at all possible. Then again, you will need all of the drivers for the machine. Some will suggest that the more current the better. This is very important as some add-in cards and devices are not well supported.
My Sempron 3400+ with an nVidia 6200 video card runs great with WIN 7. It started life as an XP SP3 machine.
OK thanks, I'll try to install Win 7 Home Basic. If this fails, I will fall back at XP SP3
The processor appears to support 64-bit addressing but only single channel memory. More important will be the motherboard and available drivers. The motherboard may not support more than 2Gb so a 64-bit OS is a waste. A six year old processor is antique by todays standards. It would probably make a good word processor, web browser and email client but I wouldn't expect it to run any current software with high processor demands. While it is pretty speedy, it's a single core/thread processor with limited throughput.
Good points carwiz.
Mathii: XP SP3 is very stable for many things that one would be doing. Just remember that the most current software is being designed with WIN 7 and multi-core processors in mind. Definitely give WIN 7 a try and if possible upgrade the RAM anyway. Good luck with the setup in any case.
Windows 7 starter might run better than home premium. It will have less features but might run smoother on the old hardware and limited ram. However, I'm not sure where you could obtain a license as it's generally only the OEM manufactures who can get the win 7 starter license.
