Reset folder's icon on windows 7 to default

    Hi everyone

Today my PC was fine. I have some files being downloaded. When i came home, i tried to create folder on my desktop. When i created the folder, the default icon was "unknown". When i right click on the folder, and went to the "change icon" tab, the icon was the default icon for folder. Then i click on "change icon" and i selected again the default folder icon. After that it was ok. But every time i create folder it is by default an unknown file. The funny thing is that if i create a folder inside other folder, the icon is ok. If you have any ideas on how can i solve this problem, i would be really happy to hear it.

    THANK YOU FOR READING!!!!!!

Hello Drikos, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might see if downloading and merging the Folder option in the tutorial below may be able to help. It will restore the default associations of folders including new folders.

Default File Type Associations - Restore

If not, then see if running a sfc /scannow command may help.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

    Dear Brink,

First of all, thank you for your quick reply, i really appreciate this.

I think i solved the problem, you see, i have Nokia mobile phone, and it comes with software called “Nokia Suite”. Recently i updated this software to version 5. When you run this application in the "Home" Section, there are 4 buttons, Sync messages, sync contacts, sync photos/videos and sync music. The only one which wasn't working was the music one. So i manual opened the Nokia OVI Player. When this software opened it asked me for update, and i updated it. Suddenly, before the application finished its update, a window came telling me that it couldn't uninstall the previous version because Nokia OVI need it, so it couldn't install the new one. Since then i have a pop up window every 5 minutes telling me that "A program running on this computer is trying to display a message", and when i create a folder on my desktop it comes with unknown icon. I followed your instructions, downloaded the registry file and scanned my PC. Well i restart my PC and opened it in Safe Mode. I created a folder on desktop, and it came with real folder icon. But i couldn't uninstall manually the Nokia Software. It tells me that this program is not actually installed. Well after that i log on with normal windows, and the folder icon fixed, probably it was the way you show me before, with registry file, and scan. Now i need to uninstall the software which causes the "Interactive Service Detection" window pop up every 5 minutes.
If i uninstall in normal log on, it says "Wait for the installation to finish"
If i uninstall in Safe Mode, it says "This program is not currently installed"
BY THE WAY TO FIX THE FOLDER ICON ISSUE.
    1) Follow Brink’s Advice. Download the registry file
    2) Scan your PC Using the code Brink gave through CMD
    3) Restart you PC. It should work.

If not, run in safe mode, create a folder on desktop and then, log on normally, it should work.

THANK YOU VERY, VERY MUCH BLINK, you are a real PRO
