screen goes blank on laptop for no apparent reason

I have an asus u46e laptop running windows 7 and the monitor goes blank at irregular intervals for no apparent reason. Sometimes I can be doing something on the computer and at other times it is while viewing a video. Moving the mouse restores the screen, but only for a short time until it happens again. I have changed the power settings and screen saver settings to no avail. The screen just keeps going blank randomly. Can anybody help.

    Thanks...Pete Burns

Hi Pete Burns, welcome to Seven Forums.
Are your display drivers up to date.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. It started doing this about three weeks ago and I have updated all my drivers with no luck.

So it seems to be acting exactly like the "turn off monitor after..." function, but the timeout period is not observed?

Set Screensaver to None in Control Panel>Personalize. I use Win7 backgrounds slideshow instead.

What are the chosen Plan and Display/Sleep settings in Control Panel>Power Options.

I have the sleep set to never but it still goes blank at irregular intervals. A mouse movement restores the screen but I will try some of the suggestions above and get back to you. Thanks....

Try uninstalling the display driver in Device Manager, then restart to auto-reinstall it.

Also in Device Manager click on Display Driver tab, then Update driver, then Browse, then Let Me Choose, then Display. It should have a list of the previously installed drivers. Try running with each previous driver for awhile to see if the problem persists. This will tell you if the problem is with driver.

If not you may have video chip problem. Are you still under 1 year Asus parts and support warranty?
