Windows 7: Bulk Printing partially fails in Windows 7

Bulk Printing partially fails in Windows 7

This is for a customer; I fix PCs for a living. Customer has Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64 bit OS.

Customer highlights a sequence of consecutive MS Word 2010 files in his C:\users\UserName\My Documents folder (NOT the My Documents library but the actual folder). He right clicks and selects Print in the pop-up menu. Some print, some do not and the order of printing is NOT EXACTLY the order of the files in the folder.

On previous customer PCs running Vista and Windows XP the above worked PERFECTLY. However, the customer was running Word 2007 on the Vista PCs.

Please note this is NOT the Word 2010 error about "xxxx normal.dot" that Google search will quickly show for bulk printing. There is NO error message. Also the normal.dot error prevents all but the first file from printing ; he gets several files to print.

Also this is NOT printing from a Window 7 library (which did not exist in earlier OS's). A windows 7 library is ACTUALLY links to files in the actual folders and MAYBE bulk printing would not work for a library BUT this is the actual My Documents folder as defined above (full path name).

Also he has only tried this for Word 2010 files BUT that could be because that is all he want to print. The problem could occur with a mix of ANY printable files (ex Word and PDFs); I can not report on whether that is true or not as I only have info from the customer on the phone about this at the moment.

My Questions

(1) Has any other sevenforums expert seen this problem or can provide a link to a forum where someone else reported this problem.

(2) What is the solution OR is does this feature just not work right in Windows 7. Regarding this last thing, please note the feature has not worked right since he first booted his Windows 7 SP1 PC. It did not work initially and then later fail.

I haven't personally experienced this, but maybe someone else has and can chime in on what they've found. It seems hard to say what the problem could be related to without seeing if it's replicated through other programs, like trying to bulk print 10 notepad files. I would try that first to see if that can narrow it down at all as to whether it's a problem with the bulk print process itself or the bulk print process of certain files.

FliGi7,

Thanks for posting here (and to my reply in another unrelated thread).

It would help to know if it is just MS Word files or not. But I can only get my customer to do so much remotely and am trying to solve this without spending 1 1/2 hours round trip to view the problem and then returning to my office to research more. But as MS Word files are probably the most common type of file that people Bulk print and he claims the problem started with Windows 7 and was not there with Vista or XP, I was hoping some contributor here would jump in and say "Oh that has a problem with Windows 7" just based on what I have posted so far.

If my thread here (and in the Experts Exchange forum) lead no-where then I **WILL* go onsite and get more info about the problem.

Usually, even if I don't have an answer, I'll post some thoughts in an unanswered thread to spark some interest and at least bump it to the top (as is the case in this thread).

I understand your limitations and concerns on this. I remember reading about a recent .NET update that broke some printing functionality, but I believe that was only related to printing from .NET applications (could be wrong, though). Just something to keep in mind as you try to troubleshoot this.

FliGi7,

Regarding
"It seems hard to say what the problem could be related to without seeing if it's replicated through other programs, like trying to bulk print 10 notepad files. I would try that first to see if that can narrow it down at all as to whether it's a problem with the bulk print process itself or the bulk print process of certain files."

The customer at my request, printed a sequence of PDFs (no Word files) and they all printed (unlike Word 2010) but they (like Word 2010) were not in the right order.

Given that does anyone at this forum have a solution.

Regarding "I remember reading about a recent .NET update that broke some printing functionality, but I believe that was only related to printing from .NET applications (could be wrong, though)."

Problem started 4 months ago. So would not be caused by a "recent" update. Please reply with then KB number of the update for Windows 7 and I can check it out. To my knowledge all updates have a associated KB number that id's the update..

FliGi7,

As I am getting no useful replies on bulk print problem here or at EE forum, I will go onsite as I believe he is not describing the problem accurately and then repost here. No one at either forum has seen the problem which bothers me as it started at first new PC boot implying it is a Windows 7 or Word 2010 problem yet NO ONE else reports it.
