Ok it took me a bit but I did all then. Then updated the firmware as I realized mine was outdated. Thought that was all going to do the trick but it didn't. So then I used chat at the brother website and they basically told me to use control center. I told them that I had been as a means to get by but really prefer fax and scan. They said to contact Microsoft as they couldn't help me. lol. They said maybe 5 things to me and that was one of them.

I have another idea but I will appologise now as you will have to uninstall the drivers you just put on.

Uninstall the printer and brother software again. Sorry! You can always reinstall it later.
Now go back to control panel and make sure there are no references of the printer left. Click add a printer and install it using the windows driver. If it asks to use the existing driver, say no and get the windows ones. This will mean you can't use the brother software but hopefully you'll be able to scan. You'll have to see which one you want.

If it doesn't work you can always reinstall the brother driver
    Sorry for the hassle

You certainly don't have to apologize as your helping me! Okay so I removed my driver, installed from windows no change. So I went ahead and installed it from brother again.
What I did figure out yesterday is that I can save my scanned bmp as tiff and use it that way but still don't understand why it won't scan as tiff. Frustrating!

A lot of people recommend IrfanView for scanning.
I've never used it, but it's free if you want to give it a try.

That might be the way forward. A 3rd party scanning software is the only real solution I can think of. I have a more drastic option if you really want to use the windows scanner.

Oh wait, as I'm typing this I've had an idea. Can you scan from inside paint? Open paint, go to the main menu and click get from scanner or camera. Does that work? Then you can save in any format.

Have you managed to resolve the issue yet? If so, would you mind posting back saying how you did? It would help others.

    Thanks
