Disk went bad, backed up files but some don't work

Okay, the storage disk in my server went bad (after 3 months!) and when I got the new one I copied everything over but some of the files aren't working right now.

Specifically the video files that we stream over serviio. They look right, they're still the same size, if you go to properties it still shows them as .avi files, but they won't run.

Is there someway that I can repair these files? I tried an .avi repair tool but it doesn't see the files as .avi.

I'm stumped.

Which Media Player are you using to open them? Normally one is not able to copy a damaged file. As you have been able to copy, chances are that they may not be damaged beyond repairs.

You can try a free repair tool named DivFix++. Read at http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-...-windows-only/.

Sorry, wanchoo...I've been out of town for awhile.

The story gets worse! It's not just the video files, it's all of them!! All our pictures, docs...everything. I had them all backing up to an external drive on a nightly basis, but wouldn't the backup now also be corrupt?

The files all are there, the size they're supposed to be, with the correct extensions. But their respectives programs just give errors when I try to open them that they aren't the correct file type.

I'm sick to my stomach....

A little more info. I just ran a program called "file repair". It scans the file and come back with the error that "your file is empty". THe properties say it's 1.5gb.

Are you able to copy say a graphics file from the affected disk on to say your Desktop? If yes then does it not open when you click/double click it?

It is possible that it is not the files that are corrupt but it is the system volume that is. You ought to run first the SFC (SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker) and then a Disk Check (Disk Check) to verify if all is well.

Please then post the results.

Man, I'm glad you're on here tonight I can copy the files onto my office machine, but they still don't work. The above file is a movie file that I copied over. If they still don't work on a different machine do I need to run the SFC and disk check?

Thanks!

Also, not sure if it helps, but new files I've copied over are working just fine.

From your messages it does now appear that it is the files that are corrurt. Did you download and try to repair them with DivFix++? Still there is no harm in running SFC and Disk Check.

Let us now wait for more expert inputs.

Yeah, I tried DivFix, but it doesn't see the files as .avi's, even though their extensions are .avi.

Still haven't figured this out. I ran the full SFC, and it did say it found and made repairs, but it didn't fix any of these files. I tried a program called "file repair" but it comes back with an error that the files are empty.

Any recommendations on file repair software?
