How to make a disk "bootable"?

I have a friend that burned me an antivirus program that his job uses, he used a flash drive to get it on dvd. I can extract it to the desktop, but cannot boot from it. Is there a way to make the disk bootable, because it is supposed to be bootable in its true form. I can still run the program, but if something was seriously wrong, I would not be able to boot from it, wanna know if that is possible!

    Thanks!

I would download the bootable ISO from the antivirus program manufacturer's web site & burn to CD Disk.
    or
Download the liveCD & Run, this is a free tool from MS:

    Windows Defender Offline
