Moniter not firing up

I run Windows 7 home premium on a 1 year old h.p. w/a LG moniter that I purchased new, love it and have had no glitches. After reading a thread in this forum about cleaning ones keyboard, I did just that. With computer shut down, I used a small soft brush for between keys, then a very slightly damp cloth to rub keys with, then a clean & dry cotton cloth to finish. Right after that, I turned power on, tower fired up, lights on keyboard lit up, but moniter has no lights and screen is dark. Did a hard shut-down, unplugged and plugged back in everything, then fired it up again, nothing. I did not unplug keyboard before cleaning, for I thought nothing would be affected if power was off. Was I wrong, and what can I do to try and troubleshoot this? Thanks in advance for your help, Rusty.

Does the monitor display 'no signal' or function in any way?
Do you have an alternate monitor to test with.

I mean it's possible you hurt something but we're talking about an incredibly low voltage circuit running through that keyboard, it's less juice than the average flashlight uses.

Quick check would be try plugging in another keyboard. I don't know if they changed it but I remember in the old days there was a signal sent to the keyboard before the PC would boot or it may have been the monitor would not light up if there was no keyboard. Perhaps IR keyboards simulate or hook the routine to signal back there's a keyboard attached or something. But I know for sure the old style wired keyboards had to be plugged in or you were out of business. It didn't come up to some mouse-only system. It just didn't come up.

Try disconnecting the monitor from the system and just plug it directly into an outlet socket. Does the power light illuminate? Can you toggle it off and on? If so, then the monitor is most likely OK and more trouble shooting will be necessary.

Thanks for the replies guys. Unfortuneately I do not have another monitor or keyboard to test with. When I turn computer on, nothing shows on the monitor at all. This doesn't sound good. What the heck could I have done by simply cleaning the keyboard?

here's the thing the monitor should react in some way to being powered on (even if disconnected from the computer completely)
I'm starting to think your monitor just managed to croak on you when you powered it down this last time.

You could also try pulling the ram out of the system and powering it on to make sure the board complains (it should beep or make an alarm of some sort if powered on without ram in it)
Generally if it knows enough to know whether the ram is there or not it will at least post (send a signal to the display) I'm just trying to break things down here, because barring something simple like a bad cable we are starting to look at hardware faults here.

Things do often decide to break when they are powered up/down for the first time in a long time.
I mean just to be clear is the monitor doing anything at all. what indication do you have it's functioning? (other than that it's LG don't get me wrong I have some of their stuff too, but remember the titanic?)

The thing is, I have used the computer once a day, every day for a year, after buying it brand new, and have not had any problems. Then i clean the keyboard, and the moniter won't light up at all, zip, nada, nothing. This is over my head, so I am gonna call the geek squad. Thanks for the replies folks. I'll post up later when it's all better.

Your call but I'll tell you this, it's very likely the geek squad bill will be greater than the cost of a new cable, new keyboard, and depending on how long they are there even the price of a 19' inch monitor combined.

I hear ya Mag. I did as Sir George suggested, and plugged the moniter directly into a wall socket, and nothing. When you say toggle, does that mean like an on/off switch, for I see nothing.

On a different note, I believe the limited warrany is 3 years, and I just dug out my receipt, and I bought it from future shop 14 months ago. I need to go to the LG website and investigate. You are right about the geek squad, Mag, that was frustration on my part. We'll get this figured out, or just UPGRADE, cuz I am worth it. Thanks for all the help folks, this place is a pleasure.

One more side note, what are the best moniters?

Pretty much all of them will pass for basic use. If you are not looking at the premium market (and DLP's are way overpriced imo anyhow)
Just about any brand should be okay. The thing I really look at when just trying to purchase a fair on is how solid the stand is for it. They make some that are incredibly flimsy. ...and it's hard to tell just by looking, I've seen many that looked unstable but were made incredibly well. User reviews on websites are always a good yard stick. Just remember some people hate everything and some people are stupid, and you should be able to get the general truth from them.
