My disk and his activation key?

I'm sure this has been asked before but I can't find anything on it.

My friend is building a new computer and wants to re use his HDD. He currently has an AMD set up, and is moving to all intel. Well I know he'll have to reformat his HDD essentially wiping all the data and having to re install windows 7.

My question is, can we use my windows 7 disk that I used for my PC, but use his activation key that is on the sticker on his pre build machine?

Will these work together?

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Have a look at this tutorial, because this method ensures he has his own copy of Windows 7, providing it is the same version as the one linked to his product key.

Yes, only if the version of Windows on the sticker matches the version on your disk. For example if his key is for Home Premium your disk would need to be home premium as well.

???

I mentioned the method in my post because that way you'd have your own copy of Windows.

If you borrow a DVD and need to reinstall at any time you'd have to try a borrow a disc again.

Far better I feel to have your own copy.

Ah so that method you posted basically puts a factory installed OS at your disposal on a disk whenever you need it?

Yes, that's why I posted the link in the hope you'd at least read it.

It will in effect be a clean install of Windows without all the factory bloatware.

Just be aware you'll be relying on Windows updates and the hardware manufacturers for the drivers.

You're very welcome.

Please follow the instructions in the tutorial carefully and post back if you have problems.

The important thing to remember is to download the correct version i.e. if your product key is for Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit, then you need to download that exact version ISO.

Multi-Disk System Windows 7 Installation and Activation ?
Hello Everyone, My system has multiple hard disks which I can select by power switches in the hard drive power cabling (when the whole system is powered off). Only one disk at a time is powered on and booting. I never have more than one drive spinning. Right now each of them has a Windows XP...

Re-used family pack activation issue following disk crash
I bought and used all three licenses of a 3 pack Windows 7 Home Premium set. One of the computers had a hard drive crash so I've rebuilt it and used the 3 pack disk again. Unsurprisingly the activation thinks that it's not a valid copy. Is there a way round this or do I have to buy it again? It...

Activation Fail and no Phone activation possible.
Hi Gents, Hope someone can help me here. I've been using a retail version of Win7 Home premium 64 for about 2 years now with no issues. During that time I've reinstalled the product possibly 6 or 8 times. Excessive I know but when things start to go wrong I like to start fresh again. Anyway...

W7 activation -- new MOBO fine but LAN connection wants activation
Hi there I recently changed a MOBO from an INTEL based one to one using an AMD PHENOM processor -- W7 didn't want any new activation rather surprisingly. (Broken Mobo and I had a spare ASUS MOBO lying around). However the first time I switched to using a LAN cable instead of a Wifi USB adapter...

Activation/Installation ID for reinstallation on a different hard disk
Hi, I have Windows 7 installed on a RAID 10 system, which I consider a bit risky (even though it is RAID 10, the motherboard isn't reliable; for example, if I disconnect a drive, and reconnect it, I fear - maybe falsely - that I would loose all data). Anyway, I want to reinstall fresh Windows on...
