I am trying to dual boot windows 7 and windows 8 consumer preview, but first i need to make a new partition in order to do so (I made the mistake of completely wiping my windows seven a few months ago) :$ anyways, when I try to it tells me I have to many partitions, it there a way I can keep my current partitions and still make another one for my windows 8? or am i stuck with only one operating system at a time?
You should be able to Shrink C in Disk Mgmt and create a Logical subpartition there since it is contiguous with D which is Logical. Do not accept conversion to Dynamic if it will not give a Logical.
If not you can use the Resize and Create function in free Partition Wizard bootable C: Partition Wizard Move/Resize Partition Video Help.

First, you have to shrink C. You can do that by using Disk Management.
That will generate "unallocated space". You then need to turn that unallocated space into a logical partition.
You might be able to do that in Disk Management also, I'm not sure.
If not, you can do it with Diskpart or with the Partition Wizard bootable disc.
I'd try disk management and see how far you can get. You can shrink C for sure with that tool, by right clicking C and choosing shrink from the menu.
You'll have to try it to see if you can then turn the unallocated space into a logical partition in Disk Management.
Do not repeat do not repeat do not accept "dynamic partitions". Just say no if you see that choice.
lol, so absolutely NO dynamic parition? only logical? and is diskpart a downloadable program? or is it already in windows?
Diskpart is in Windows, accessible from a command prompt.
If you say yes to dynamic disks, you are in a world of hurt and may lose your data and have to completely reformat the drive.
Disk Management may offer you dynamic if you have 3 or more primary partitions. Refuse, at the top of your voice.
The alternative to dynamic is extended/logical partitions, but you may not be able to make them in Disk Management.
okay, i have diskpart open, so how do i use it to make a logical partition out of my unacollated space?
