Can a laptop get on the internet without a hotspot I wish to take my laptop to my aunt's 95th birthday so she can view well wishers on Skype. I have Skype on my laptop as do the well wishers.
If this is a possibility what do I need? | My System Specs |

If I understand you correctly: You would need some source of internet: DSL, Cable, Satellite, or even dial up. You could also use a smartphone if you know how to connect it to the computer. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom, HP Pavilion g6, HP ProBook 4530s OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64, Windows 7 Pro x64 (both laptops) CPU Intel i7-3770K (OC 4.7GHz),Intel i3-380M, i3 2350M Motherboard Asus P8P67 (REV 3.1) Memory 8GB Corsair Vengeance, 6GB SK Hynix, 4GB SK Hynix Graphics Card EVGA GeForce GTX 660 2GB, Intel HD Graphics (both laptops) Sound Card Realtek Integrated, IDT (both laptops) Monitor(s) Displays Samsung S22C200B 21.5" Screen Resolution 1920x1080, 1366x768 (both laptops) Keyboard Logitech K360 Mouse Logitech M305 PSU Coolmax CUL-850B Case Thermaltake Element G Cooling Corsair H60 Hard Drives Crucial 128GB

I hear phones with internet can get a computer on the internet as well, a slow connection, but it's something. Most phones come with USBs these days, so it shouldn't be too difficult. I don't know how it's done, but I read of it on a couple sites through Google.
Here's one of them: Connect to the internet using your cell phone and laptop computer | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number CYBERPOWER OS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1 CPU AMD Athlon II x2 260 (3.20Ghz) Regor 35nm Technology Motherboard ASUSTek M4N68T-M-V2 (AM3 Socket) Memory 4GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @669Mhz (9-9-9-24) Graphics Card Zotac GeForce GTS 450 (1GB) Sound Card Nvidia High Defenition Audio Monitor(s) Displays Acer S231HLbid LED Monitor 23" Screen Resolution 1920x1080 1080p 60Hz Keyboard XTREME Gear USB Keyboard Mouse XTREME Gear USB Mouse PSU SeaSonic M12II 620 Bronze Modular Active PFC 80+ Bronze Cert Case Cooler Master Elite Gaming Case Black 430 Cooling Cooler Master Hyper 212 Heatsink. A USB Internet dongle would do the job. You can get them on a pay as you go plan. Not the cheapest way but useful for occasional use. | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Hewlett-Packard/G62-107SA Notebook OS Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 7601 Multiprocessor Free Service Pack 1 CPU Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU M 330 @ 2.13GHz Motherboard Hewlett-Packard 1425 Memory 8 GB DDR3 Graphics Card Intel(R) HD Graphics Sound Card Realtek High Definition Audio Monitor(s) Displays Builtin Screen Resolution 1366 x 768 x 32 bits (4294967296 colors) @ 60 Hz Mouse Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 Hard Drives 250 GB SATA Hard Disk Drive 7200 rpm

There are 3 ways, tethering a smartphone, using a cellular mobile hotspot (mifi), and using a cellular air card.
Tethering usually requires a surcharge from the cellular provider, but can usually be turned on and off monthly and sometimes can be used for less than a month and you only pay pro-rated fee for that month.
There are ways around paying for the tethering charge, rooting or jail breaking the phone and running a tethering app.
My brother has a rooted android phone and we used his phone to connect our iPads to the Internet Thursday while we were at a golf tournament.
The other 2 options require buying hardware and paying a monthly fee.
I would call up some cellular providers in your area and see if they rent the mifi or air cards if you can't tether to a smartphone. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number HAL-9000 OS Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit CPU Intel i7 3770K Motherboard Asus Sabertooth Z77 Memory 16GB DDR3 1333 Corsair XMS3 Graphics Card XFX HD6950 2GB EyeFinity Sound Card Logitech G35 & Sennheiser PC135 & VIA HD Monitor(s) Displays 23" HP 2310e, 23" Samsung B2230, 21.5" Viewsonic Screen Resolution 5760x1080 Keyboard Logitech G15 and G13 Mouse Logitech G700 Gaming Mouse PSU Antec True Power New 650watt Case Cooler Master HAF-932 Cooling Corsair H60 Hydro Cooler, 3x 230mm Fans, 2x120mm Fan Hard Drives 16TB of Storage

I guess most options have been discussed above.
If you're looking for something short-term, a USB Internet dongle or using your Phone's Internet connection via USB are two possible options. The latter being easier to carry out, but inadequate for Skype video calls. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Dell / Custom OS Windows 7 HP / Ultimate x64 CPU Core i5 / X4 955 BE Motherboard OEM / Gigabyte 880GM-USB3 Memory 4GB DDR3 1333Mhz / 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz Graphics Card HD5470 / HD5670 Sound Card Onboard Monitor(s) Displays FullHD 15" / Dell 22" WS Screen Resolution 1920x1080 / 1680x1050 Keyboard Logitech Mouse Logitech PSU CM Case CM Cooling CM, Antec Hard Drives 320GB / 1.5TB |

The next problem you will face is, unless you find somewhere with decent 4G cellular service, you aren't going to be running a video conference anyway. | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 CPU Intel Core i7-2600 Motherboard Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD3P-B3 Memory 12 GB Patriot Extreme DDR3-1333 Graphics Card Nvidia GTX 470 Monitor(s) Displays Dell UltraSharp 2209WA PSU OCZ ModStream 700W Case CoolerMaster HAF 912 Advanced Cooling CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Plus Hard Drives OCZ Agility3 240 GB, WD5001AALS, WD7501AALS Can a laptop get on the internet without a hotspot problems?
