Windows 7: Alt + 7 Behavior

Alt + 7 Behavior

Hi,

I use MyOpera webmail and recently tried using the keyboard shortcuts to enter special characters (from the Character Map) without opening the CM and doing the copying-and-pasting manually. In many cases I'm able to enter characters successfully, but whenever I have a character which includes a "7," (like the degree symbol: alt + 0176) The moment I hit the 7 Firefox takes me away from the MyOpera compose page to the FF homepage with a 'bullet' character in the Google search bar ! Same thing if I just hit "alt + 7."

I know the problem is not with FF because I also see odd behavior when doing this with NotepadPlus. While most of the characters are inserted correctly without problems, if I try inserting a degree symbol, when I release the alt button, the character will be inserted at the beginning of the line instead of at the appropriate place in the line. It also does this occasionally with other characters that don't use a 7 in the code. (Not surprisingly I do NOT have issues with Notepad itself, being part of the Windows 7 OS. But I like Notepad++ better for a text editor it auto-wraps text when I resize a window or edit previous text.)

I also know the problem is not with FF's add-ons because I checked them all for any hotkeys that would conflict with the CM's symbol codes, but there was nothing.

So, my question: is there something about the CM's keyboard codes that is known to cause little glitches like this ?

Thanks for any input !
