Bill,
I'd get rid of all of those 3rd party products and use WMP and WMC.

They many not be as elegant but they certainly work.

A Win 7 system, after a fresh install, has no problems. What this means is that software that you have installed is causing the problem. Many different types of software can interact in the strangest ways, and the very worst is internet and virus security software and even from some very well known brands.

Perhaps a clean install, with frequent use of system imaging and system restore points will enable you o locate the problems maker. Stay away from torrent software and torrent sites.

Good luck.

Windows 7 64 bit

Karl;

The only reason that I use Windows is because of the rich applications environment that it engenders. Apart from this I would be running BSD Unix, which I am much more familiar with. (I worked a bit with Bill Joy's group on Camus when they were developing VM Unix for the Vax 780 in the late 1980s - the precusor of 4 BSD Unix, and ran a CS research group for several decades after that where BSD was our preferred platform.)

I have run all of these apps (that are now perhaps causing problems) for several years on my previous Win box - 32 bit Win 7.

That being said, after I reinstalled VLC and k-Lite and again ran the system file checker, indeed, the same set of system files that were replaced the first time were again replaced. So one of those two programs is adversely affecting some system files. (WMP also has a problem even after restoring the system files, so I suspect a Win 7 problem related to video - perhaps due to the Nvidia card that I am using.)

I hope that with Win 8 MS hardens the OS a bit to protect against this sort of thing (though this is hard if the corrupting element is in a device driver).

I will probably mark this issue as solved at this point unless I run into more problems now that I have removed VCL, et al.

Thanks for you interactions.

Bill

Hmm, I have never heard of video players having that behavior with stuff like the USB ports.

Do you get any BSODs from time to time when it happens? Having this answer might or might not confirm what I'm thinking right now, but it's probably not what I'm thinking.

As I commented earlier, I now believe that the USP issue is a side effect.

The whole system locks up - perhaps the result of the CPU getting a halt instruction.
BSOF does not result. The framebuffer maintains the screen as it was at lockup until the system is forceably powered off and restarted.
