    Tiger Direct, NewEgg ?

    Hello,

Sr. Citizen now, and I'll tell you; this stuff doesn't get any easier.
I've gotten such really great help here in the past, let me take the liberty of asking this too. Great Forum; tremendous asset.

My HP Pavillion's Desktop HD has conked out after about 3 yrs, and as I don't really feel up to replacing the HD, etc., I'll be getting a new one.

Read all the reviews can make one crazy.
Seems like no one really likes their Dell, HP, Gateway, etc. Or any !
Can go up to about $ 700 for a new Desktop.

All in all, it seems as if ASUS has about the best rep. these days per many reviews I've read ? But, there have apparently been many "piece of junk" comments also
    True ? Comments ?

Anyway, would also appreciate any comments on NewEgg or Tiger Direct as to buying a desktop ? Warr., how hard to return in practice, etc. ?
Which has the better rep. ? Why ?
    Or, anyone else, perhaps ?

Does it make more sense to buy from ASUS directly; I think you can ?

Again, much thanks for all the help; both now and in the past.

I've heard from a very good and well informed friend that ASUS is one of the most reliable ones because they make their own motherboards. If you are looking for great customer service though, I'd personally recommend Dell, my brother has had a dell laptop for 4-5 years and their customer service is amazing, they come within 1-2 days to fix any problem he has had.

Newegg is a very good place to buy computers and computer parts, but I don't recommend you get a desktop from them since the shipping costs will be expensive. Desktops are big, so they will be expensive to ship. I suggest you go to your local Office Depot to get a desktop.

Yes. And they have limited value. It's only one person's story and you don't know if that person knows what they are doing or if they have a vendetta against a particular brand.

I wouldn't rely too much on reviews because any brand or model has its share of horror stories.

Sure it's true---for that particular purchaser. It's his experience. All brands have "piece of junk" stories.

Newegg has the best rep generally. But you should understand the return privileges available for any specific purchase. It can vary from item to item.

I would doubt it. You might end up dealing with Asia directly, which would be a major pain.

In your shoes, I'd divide possible sources into 2 categories:

Face to face (you go to a store and buy something; Costco, Best Buy, Microcenter, Fry's)

Not face to face (Dell, Newegg, whatever)

Face to face has the advantage of no postage charges, but you will likely pay tax.

Be sure you understand the return, warranty, and service policies whatever you choose. You have some chance of DOA parts and need to know what happens in that case.

If I was going to buy a pre-assembled PC, rather than having one built custom, I'd probably go with Dell. But I might buy it from a vendor like Costco rather than Dell to get a face to face experience.

Whatever you choose, let us know what you have tentatively picked out before you pull the trigger. $700 will go quite a ways if you configure it right.

I'd also watch the Sunday ads for Best Buy, Office depot, etc. to get their low $300 special which should be more than adequate for your needs.

I prefer Newegg. But if you live in Cal, you pay sales tax. For TigerDirect sales tax is due in FL and Tn (I believe). But for a desktop, I would look into the Sunday flyer of BestBuy and OfficeDepot. You may get a better deal there.

LOL. Greg was 2 minutes faster.

I had a dell, HP, Acer, Toshiba, Gateway. Alll of them have customer support at the same level. They are all not very useful as far as technical help. I had to send my computers back a few times average time without a computer is 1 month if you do send it. As far as them taking it back while under warranty HP, Dell, Gateway all have not dissapointed me. I can't say about the rest since i havent had to send them my desktop.

MY bottom line brands review wont be much help, youll get the same just about anywhere.

I buy everything from Newegg, but I build my own computers and have never bought an assembled one online. My son buys Dell exclusively and has had nothing but high praises about the machines themselves, and the customer service he gets from Dell.

One person's good news story is another person's horror story, though, and although I do read reviews, I discount about half of the excellent reviews, and about half of the very bad reviews and hope I get a good perspective. There are some people that would complain if their mother-in-law died. (Not a good analogy probably.)

If you hadn't started a new thread others who were contributing yesterday would still be subscribed and able to chip in more easily. Ordering A New Desktop PC Questions, Please. (from a Sr. citizen)

I just stopped by Office Depot to see what they had and was surprised to see the popular Acer slimline on sale this week in their weekly ad for $259: AMD Dual Core E-450, 500gb HD, 4gb RAM, Win7 HP. http://officedepot.shoplocal.com/off...id=-2067514168

Two of my roommates in Calif bought these for $287 and $319 several years ago and have had no problems at all. I clean reinstalled WIn7 32 bit for both of them.

When I first researched the model there were warnings to make sure the DVD player door opens unhindered since is installed vertically. That's the only complaint I've ever seen on the model which is perhaps the best buy I've ever seen.
