Mouse does not work on desktop

After some time of working, my desktop doesn't respond to left/right mouse clicks.
Also my desktop icons do not highlight when I pass over them.
    Can anybody help?
My OS is Windows 7 64bit

Welcome to the Seven Forums, kkam. Have you tested the mouse on another computer? If so is it working fine there? Does another mouse from some other computer works fine on your system?

What sort of a mouse have you got? It would have helped a lot if you had filled up your system specs in detail.

I used a second old wired PS2 mouse and the results are the same.

How about testing your mouse on another computer? Are the mouse keys (Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Ease of Access Center\Make the keyboard easier to use) working?

Wanchoo the same situation is happenning to me. As it happens, both buttons on my mouse work perfectly inside my browser, but not on the desktop, unless I reboot. I dont know it it's running certain programmes like virtual box or what ever that do it. What's more I cant help feeling that if the mouse were the culprit you would have had some cues in the person's question. Like she/he would have said it works nowhere.
