If you intend spending $3000 again you can get a decent desktop and a decent laptop these days for that kind of money.

That way you get the power of the desktop plus the portability of the laptop.

As for which is the best, it's very subjective and opinions are very often influenced by personal experience, be they good or bad.

You might want to try reading some of the many computer magazines on the market and in particular those that cater for consumer reviews and best buys.

Follow these steps to Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which will help you understand how Win7 handles drivers and is best installed and set up.

Unlike XP or Vista it's important to let Win7 provide the drivers initially via the installer and optional Updates, only providing any drivers missing in Device Manager after all Updates are done. Then only swap out drivers which cause performance problems. We can help you analyze this.

You misunderstood his point. Yes, you can build a $500 computer that's faster than a three year old laptop. Keep the comparisons relevant....compare both systems as brand new. The OP was asking about a new system....so a new $1500 desktop could run circles around a $3000 laptop, especially in graphics-intensive apps.

Why not give the Dell site a try, even though it says M17X, the drivers may still apply.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned yet that most Windows Vista drivers will work fine with Windows 7. Some may have to be installed in Vista compatibility mode.
