If you intend spending $3000 again you can get a decent desktop and a decent laptop these days for that kind of money.

That way you get the power of the desktop plus the portability of the laptop.

As for which is the best, it's very subjective and opinions are very often influenced by personal experience, be they good or bad.

You might want to try reading some of the many computer magazines on the market and in particular those that cater for consumer reviews and best buys.

You misunderstood his point. Yes, you can build a $500 computer that's faster than a three year old laptop. Keep the comparisons relevant....compare both systems as brand new. The OP was asking about a new system....so a new $1500 desktop could run circles around a $3000 laptop, especially in graphics-intensive apps.
