The drive is a Western Digital My Passport 1 Terabyte USB 3.0

I would test the drive to verify how healthy it is:
WD Support / Downloads / My Passport / My Passport Essential
Don't worry if the link doesn't reference your specific drive, the software is for multiple HD products...
