Now I have a major problem

My computer was hanging on 'starting window' screen. So I tried all the things that normally would be tried. I could not chkdsk but I did sfc /scannow which returned no errors. I tried startup repair from the DVD, it could not go though most of the time for a couple of days but finally showed no errors once last night. Then I was able to log on after a long long wait at the starting windows screen. When I logged on, I could not really do anything. I tried to do window update. It could not even download the files. Everything seemed really slow. I could open task manager. Everything looked fine. But I noticed that a couple of the svchost processes one from the user and one from the system used >100M of RAM. At the same time, the CPU usage was up to 95%. I tried 3 times but did finish a quick Malwarebytes scan and get rid of some of the objects. After the scan, I wanted to go through the startup repair again and started from the DVD. I pressed F12, started a reboot from the DVD drive and went to bed. When I woke up this morning, the computer was all quite. I tried to started it by pressing the power button. The button turned on then a clicking sound at the DVD drive and stopped. I tried a few times and the same happened every time. I reconnected the hard drive, took off and put back the RAM and so far no luck. Does it mean either the CPU or motherboard is dead?
