I tried to partition HD with gparted now not boot up

I fear the answer to this question as I am not as diligent in backing up my data as I should be, but I tried to create a new partition out of my c: using gparted and after about 3hrs it still had 6 hours to go so I thought something might be wrong so I cancelled it and now my computer won't boot up. I just get a black screen with a horizontal blinking cursor. I tried putting in the win7 repair disc and no windows os's show up for repair so I just had it check my HD for errors, which took a long time, then rebooted but no luck. Then I put in the win7 os disc and it said that windows os has some start up problems, try repair and reboot? So I did but again no luck. Have a deleted all my data?

What I would do is boot up from a Linux LiveCD, like Ubuntu or Mint and see if your data is still there. Linux can read/write NTFS. If so, I'd highly recommend dumping your data on to a USB stick or something. If you canceled resizing a partition you may have to reinstall Windows, but first things first, get your data.

We recommend free Partition Wizard bootable CD for failsafe partitioning with no failures in countless operations we've helped with here. All others except Disk Mgmt can fail.

If you have a Win7 DVD or Repair CD you can try to copy out your files with Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console.

Boot PW CD to look at your drive map to see if partitions are intact, make sure the Win7 partition or it's 100mb System Reserved partiition (preferred if you have it) is marked Active.

Highlight the Win7 Disk # and from Disk tab select Rebuild MBR, Apply. If WIn7 doesn't start then run Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times.

If partitions are scrambled you may be able to Recover them with Partition Wizard Partition Recovery Wizard - Video Help.

Then if necessary Clean Reinstall following the steps in this tutorial which are the same for retail, and include the latest installer.

I often read recommendations for partitioning programs, particularly on this site. Purely a question for curiosity, but I have repartitioned, and partitioned, many time using the Windows built in utility, without, so far, any problems. Is there something which normally can go wrong with it, of which I have been lucky enough not to experience?

As stated in my earlier post, Disk Mgmt is fail-safe for the most part. I don't know about a power failure. I've shut it down during shrink operations and it always recovers.

The only 3rd party partitioning program I've found that never fails is Partition Wizard bootable CD. I've had almost all of the others fail at some time or the other during Resizing with full data loss, including boot disks like Easeus..

I usually just use the built in windows partitioning tool but this time it would keep getting stuck querying my database, so I got impatient and used gparted.
