After using msconfig to do a clean boot computer hangs on welcome scr

My power cord died for my Acer Aspire laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I purchased a new one. This worked fine for a day or two. Then during a Skype call the computer crashed. After that when booting one of 4 things would occur.

1. Sometimes it would do a CHKDSK
2. Others some different troubleshooting I do not remember the name of.
3. Just hang.
4. Boot and allow me to login only to require as much as 3 hours for every click to take effect.

I performed the following steps to try to troubleshoot the problem.


Step 1: Start the System Configuration Utility
Click Start
, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
Step 2: Configure Selective Startup options
In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click Selective Startup on the General tab.
Click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
Note The Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.
Click the Services tab.
Click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box.
Click Disable All, and then click OK.

I then rebooted. After this the computer hangs on the welcome screen with the blue circle swirling around. I am on a library computer and will try booting in safe mode when I get home. I would have tried that before but ran out of time. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Let us know if you can get into Safe Mode.

Also, if you cannot, try a system restore:

• Do the following steps:
  • Read carefully through System Repair Disc - Create...
  • Use the System Repair Disc to access the System Recovery Options...
  • Use the System Recovery Options to choose System Restore...
  • Follow OPTION TWO of System Restore and pay close attention to the NOTE: in OPTION ONE step 8.

I can boot in Safe Mode and I created a repair disc. When I try the recover options it tells me that no restore points have been created. This seems odd since help claims that a restore point is created automatically once a week. I may have to install Windows fresh. I forgot to mention that when I was able to boot in normal mode it claimed that my copy of Windows was not genuine. This never happened in the previous 2 years of my use of this laptop. At least I can get on the internet if I boot in Safe Mode with Networking.

Good. If you can get into Safe Mode, you can backup any important data before doing the clean install.

Even though you are not getting a blue screen, it may be helpful.

There are other steps here for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot so you know you've done everything before if necessary rescuiing your files to Clean Reinstall or run Factory Recovery.

Thanks, I will check that info. I am now able to boot in normal mode and get my desktop icons, but the response to user actions is painfully slow (like an hour for a simple click of the mouse). I am backing up more files and waiting on being able to get Windows 7 Professional as I need that anyhow. I will let you know how it goes.

I'd test the RAM and HD first from the steps I posted above.

Hi, yes, I did to a numbrt of mem tests and chkdsks, but no luck. So I tried a restore to factory default and I got an I/O error. Now it seems to want to finish the restore every time I boot and it just hangs on the welcome screen with a 2 min message being displayed. I am at the library now and will try the factory restore again when I get home. I am still trying to burn a copy of Win 7 Pro that I can download from my college, but I cannot do this at the library.

No restoration methods worked so I wiped the disk and installed Windows 7 Pro. Glad I backed everything up, but I can't see the external hard drive now. I am sure I will find a solution to that. If not I guess I will be back.

Be sure to follow these steps to Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which are the same for retail.

Unplug all other HD's, back up your data and wipe the target HD first with Diskpart Clean Command to clear the boot sector of any conflicting code.

If external HD still doesn't show up then give it a letter in Disk Management.
