Windows 7: Blank screen on boot up, before login screen; slow startup

Hey, first time posting here, so sorry if this is the wrong section or anything.

Lately my laptop has been experiencing a problem when I boot it up. After the Starting Windows screen with the glowing Windows logo, a blank black screen pops up that lasts for ages (I'd say at least 5 minutes). Afterwards the login screen will appear as normal.

When I log in, the desktop appears quickly, but when I try to start any programs, like my browser, they are slow and freeze often (usually I can run programs with no problem when the desktop appears). Sometimes the laptop will hang every three seconds. It takes a bit of time before the programs and the laptop run like normal.

I've tried several things without success:
-Uninstalling and reinstalling graphics drivers (I've never updated my drivers because no updates are ever available for my driver; is that normal? My laptop is about two years old)
-Defragging hard drive
-System Restore (I don't seem to have any restore points)
-Clean bootup
-Startup repair (or whatever that first F8 option is called)

Have you installed anything new, hardware or software? Sometimes OEM's don't/won't have driver updates.

I'm running the SFC scan right now, so I'll post the results later.

I don't think I've installed anything recently. This startup problem started occurring at around the same time I disabled my Bluetooth. Re-enabling it didn't do anything though. I also recently updated my Synaptics driver, but this startup problem was occurring before that.

After both scans I rebooted the laptop, but I still got the ~5 minute blank screen before the login screen.

Whew! You only had to say no violations and one malware found and deleted.

Does the long black screen occur on a cold boot too, such as when the laptop has been off for hours? I was thinking maybe there is an overheat problem caused by dust in the vents, or where it is sitting. If used on your lap, or a soft surface, the vents could be blocked.

I would run a boot trace. There's an excellent guide here:

That should help you narrow down the cause of the black screen.

A couple of possibilities.

Are you conncected to a network?
If Yes,
THEN disconnect from the network.

Problem gone?

I realize that you may need the network, but we need to fault-isolate.

If you boot into SAFE MODE, is the problem gone?

BOOT TO SAFE MODE

Ø Power down your computer.
Ø Power up your computer.
Ø IMMEDIATELY—Start tapping the SPACEBAR
Ø When the Windows Boot Manager screen appears,
Press the F8 key
Ø The Advanced Boot Options screen will appear.
Ø Using the down arrow key, highlight Safe Mode
Ø Press the ENTER key.

In shorthand,
PowerUp | Spacebar until Windows Boot Manager
| F8 | Safe Mode | ENTER

Oh, sorry about that, haha. And nope, I turn off my laptop every night so it's basically cold booted every day, and I have to wait for the blank screen to go away every time.

I tried downloading the toolkit, but apparently it didn't install correctly (probably my fault). When I rebooted my laptop, I got the blue screen of death and couldn't get Windows to start, so I had to do a System Restore. I guess I'll try again later. Thanks for the suggestion though.

If by network you mean internet connection (I sound like a newb), then yes, I turned it off before rebooting, but it didn't work. The problem does go away when I boot in Safe Mode though!
