    Connect/Disconnect Device

    I connect a device, oh let's say an ext hdd or flash to my pc, do my thing (normally xfr files) and when done do the required safe-disconnect procedure. A short while later I may need it again, but I always have to physically disconnect the cable/device and re-connect to get my pc to 'see' the device again. Is there away to do this w/o physically disconnecting the external device?

    (I went from Windows ME straight to 7 and seem to recall that there was a 'detect hardware' button that would re-establish the device's presence on the pc w/o the hassle of removing and replacing/unplugging/plugging the cable/device)

    The possible method is to safely remove the drive and then force Windows to re-scan for hardware changes;

    Start|type Device Manager in search box|Enter|Right click on root computer entry|Scan for hardware changes

    Would this program be suitable for your purposes?

    HotSwap!

    thnx solarmystic - I tried the scan as suggested w/o success. I am reluctant (read:scared) to try the HotSwap program. Could you or someone with more savy than myself give it a go and report back? thnx.
