    Cannot run programs as Administrator on the Admin account - Windows 7


    Hello, I have Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

    I just got the hp p6823w computer and my user account is set to administrator.
    Windows won't let me Install/Uninstall any programs. The Install program problem only happens with a .MSI file extension. I also can't "Run as administrator" on anything but a .EXE file extension. Also, if all this wasn't bad enough. Windows troubleshooter finds no error.

    Additionally, I downloaded a Microsoft Mr. Fix it tool for the install/uninstall programs.
    It returned a corrupt registry key for that program. I ran Ccleaner and nothing...

    I am good with windows 7 but this is crazy!

    You might see if either one of the tutorials below may be able to restore "Run as administrator" to the context menu of the other file extensions. :)

    Is there some thread that explains why an Admin account does not have explicit admin privileges? I've read in other threads that people had to create a new local user as admin and that takes care of the problem, but it seems like a pain in the ass to have to resetup all of my user details all over again....

    Hello Poldim,

    This was done for better security.

    Since Vista, administrator accounts run unelevated by default now. If administrators try to run anything elevated (run as administrator), they will get a UAC prompt (if turned on) to allow or deny letting it run elevated or not.

    This helps give better security since programs (ex: malware) will not be able to run elevated in the background without UAC letting you know and to allow or deny.

    There's more detailed information in the tutorial below for UAC to help explain it's purpose more if you like.
    You do have a built-in "elevated" Administrator account that you can log in to that has unrestricted full rights. However, anything running while you are logged in to this account will also have the same full rights. It's recommended to only use this account as needed because of this.
