Hi, I thought I would update this thread.
It turns out that after trying all the suggestions, the hard drive was faulty and had to be replaced.
Fortunately I managed to save the data.
Thanks for all the help given.

Yep I know how you feel I am on my last Toshiba ever as every one I've had the HDD goes bung - have SSD's in them now with an OEM - end of problem.:)

I have had Toshiba's ever since the 286 days and that makes about 6 of them. I also have gone to SSD's and they work great. None of the prior Toshi's had a hard disk problem, Maybe I am lucky.

I have two SSD's in my new Qosmio which are speedy.. Nothing but SSD's for me now..

Yep agree Rich maybe I have just struck some bad ones. The first an A200 I recently flipped a Sandisk into and it hasn't missed a beat and I think it is or was the Toshiba brand drives perhaps.

Mind you I have dome several fixes on them and each one has had HDD problems cured of course by a new HDD non Toshiba.

Remember you can use the Win7 license which came with the Toshiba to reinstall on the SSD's. No need to waste another license.
