    can't get laptop to boot past starting windows logo

    Acer Aspire 5532-5534
    Windows 7 Home Premium

    I can't get the laptop to boot past the glowing window logo that says "Starting Windows". It doesn't freeze it just hangs there forever. I tried booting into safe mode and it hangs at windows\system32\drivers\atipcie.sys and then restarts.

    I don't need to save anything on the computer so easiest way to get it up and running will work. I don't have any discs to restore.

    Thank you in advance.

    Reformatting the Acer Aspire
    1. Press the "ALT" and "F10" keys together while your computer is restarting and the Acer logo is showing to enter the Acer Aspire's reformatting utility.
    2. Follow the on-screen prompts. Your laptop's hard drive will reformat and the original applications will be reinstalled. Your computer will restart after the reformatting process is complete.
    3. Enter your name and other personal information when prompted during the Windows operating system setup process.

    That's likely a hang on the ATI video driver trying to load. You can roll it back or repair it by booting into the Win7 installer or System Repair Disk to run Startup Repair or System Restore as shown in these Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 - Windows 7 Forums.

    If they fail then work through the other steps up to if necessary running Recovery or Reinstall.

    I don't mind. I just took over this computer from a friend about a week ago and have yet to really make it mine so nothing really to lose.

    For a more precise measurement of the temp, try SpeedFan. It is a free utility and can be downloaded from;

    (For future reference when you can access Windows OS)
