Have you checked that you installed your Hard drive correctly?
Sorry but I'm not sure how to check for that
He bought the laptop so he didn't put any hardware in it.

What you're talking about is language display - this is enabled in Windows 7 with language packs
Windows Home Premium and Professional don't support language packs, so you'll have to buy Windows Ultimate 32/64 bit.
    Compare Windows - Microsoft Windows
Well before this my computer was using 32bit Home Premium and then the hard disk broke and I replaced it again with 64bit home premium. In the 32bit the Japanese text remained as is and didn't convert back to blank squares. It's only now that after converting to 64bit the Japanese text which showed itself before all of a sudden changed back to blank squares.
Hard disk = Hard Drive? Not sure

Well actually I mentioned earlier that my the hard disk in my computer broke (32bit) and I bought a new one and upgraded to 64bit. I went to a computer repair specialist to get it fixed and they did what had to be done

Sorry i did read it correctly. But that means it could be possible that his computer isn't built for 64bit.

Local repair shop. The nearest HP repair shop was over 30km away from me and only open during weekdays on working hours. Since I have to work during that time, I thought it best to leave it to a local repair shop.

    This really a bad thing?

But how does that work? 64bit is working perfectly fine except for the language part. It used to show the Japanese text before, but now it only shows blank squares.
I don't understand how that could be a problem

How long ago did the blank boxes appear? When you installed the 64bit OS?

    No, after.
I told the computer repairman to upgrade to 64bit when I asked him to repair it.
When I got my computer back, I enabled the Japanese text and it showed up properly on my file names after restart. A few weeks later the text was then replaced with blank characters for no apparent reason. I re-enabled the Japanese text but the same problem persists. I can still type in Japanese on word though. It's just that the names of the files which have Japanese writing now only show blank boxes.
