    Multiple Computers one keyboard/mouse. Benefits?

    Hello all,

What benefit would there be in having multiple computers?
I understand that one could act as a server, and the remaining as clients.

PLEASE explain what this means in layman's terms. List examples.

    Thanks in advance,

When I build a new pc, I keep the old one(s) and have them all connected in a 'mini render farm' . I make 3D animations and rendering out the final movie clip needs a lot of power/time and ties up a single machine til finished. With my set-up I have a 2600k, a i7 930, a Q9400 and an AMD quad. This effectively gives me a 24 core machine that can do most render jobs overnight. Also I often have a batch of TV movies to convert to mp4, so I can leave 1 pc doing that while I do my thing on another.

I understand some people with large houses/large families have a central file server with movies + music that everyone can access from any room.

You didn't mention a monitor ... are multiple monitors needed?

For me the benefit is "PHYSICAL Desk Space" and less confusion using a single KB/MS/Mon for multiple PC's.
Using a KVM switch can save buying another KB + Mouse + Monitor...and the desk space needed for these.

    It depends on
    1) Do you, or someone else need to "use/control" different PC's at the same time, so a KVM is not a usable option?
    2) Why do you need 2 or more PC's?

    • Using one PC as a SERVER is one thing, but multiple CLIENT PC's is something different.
    • How many people need to use a PC at the same time?
