Allow prefetch for applications on HDD but not on SSD

Hello everyone,

On my desktop machine, I have a 256gb Samsung SSD as the primary boot drive it contains the OS and a few applications. In addition to the SSD I have a 2tb HDD which contains the bulk of my data and some applications.

After reading about SSD tweaks, one of the things that was oft repeated was to disable prefetch for systems with SSDs (and even that Win 7 'may' do this autonomously).

I know where the registry key is for prefetch and the 4 options. In my case I would like to set the option to "1" for allowing only prefetching of applications (no prefetching the boot since the OS is on the SSD). Of course all the applications on the SSD will still prefetch which is not optimal.

Basically I want the system to parse the path before an application gets run. If the path starts with "D:" (HDD) allow prefetch to do its work, otherwise skip the prefetch process.

Perhaps this could be done with a mini script or something along those lines but since it would need to run for pretty much every program it would need to be quick.

Does anyone know of a way to do this?

Quick Addition: The system in question above is an slightly older Intel Nehalem i7 920 running Windows 7 Home Premium x64.

I did find a way to run a script in place of/before an application by modifying the registry entry at "HKCR\exefile\shell\open\command". The default entry is a simple batch style parameter "%1" %* which can be replaced by a different command. I have tested this for notepad.exe only so far but I was able to run my mini script before notepad started. My only issue is, I have no idea how to get a script to turn on or off prefetch when starting an application.

Side note: If you mess with the reg key you might want to make sure to have a backup and not to close regedit; cause if you mess it up (like I did a few times) you cant start any new programs at all!

Again, any help is greatly appreciated!
