7 Professional 64-Bit Hanging on Restart, Help

Installed 7 Professional 64-Bit a week or two ago, but now my computer hangs on restart. I get the "shutting down" screen, then it goes black and stays that way, no restart. Cold boot works just fine, so I can shut down and then turn back on, but restart doesn't. Anyone have an idea why this is happening?

    drdrift

Could you go into event viewer (type event in search) and go to the windows log>applications tab. If there are any errors could you use the snipping tool to take a screenshot and upload it to us?

Let us know if you need help either with event viewer or in uploading the snip

Hi drdrift, welcome to the forums.

In addition to Ken's response, what AntiVirus software do you use? Some have been known to cause shutdown/restart issues.

Thanks for the event viewer tip... I get this error upon restart "The NVIDIA Display Driver Service service has reported an invalid current state 32." Is this a driver issue? If so, uninstall and reinstall driver? I'm using the latest WHQL driver from Nvidia (190.62) which I've had installed since I installed 7.

Also, thanks for the speedy responses

You may want to type 'Performance' into the start menu and press enter. Then click 'Performance Information and Tools' then 'Advanced tools'.

This will highlight, if any, anything that is imparing performance (in your case the restart) and possible steps to follow to resolve the issue.

Uninstalled Nvidia Control Panel and all Nvidia drivers and system was able to restart normally. I reinstalled Nvidia Control Panel and 190 drivers and system was able to restart normally again... until BSOD in Nvidia Control Panel which caused the problem to start again.

I isolated the problem to the overclocking feature of the Nvidia Control Panel's Performance Tools. The driver is good and the System Monitor, Update Monitor, etc all works fine. When I use the overclocking utility that's included, though, it causes the system for whatever reason to not restart. The overclock is stable for hours under Prime95 and everything else works perfectly. So, I don't know. Thanks for everyone's help, though, I'll keep searching the forums. Search = n00b's best friend.
