Cannot shrink drives -> "service disabled".

    Hey all,

I want to create some free space on my primary drive which is a 128gb SSD. Clicking on "shrink partition" gives me a message that tells me it cannot complete the request because there is an essential service inactive. However it does not tell me which service or how to reactivate it.

    Anyone?

Hello mate, first post a snip of a maximized Windows disk management so we can rule that out then the "service" issue.

Also that option will not be available because for some reason its linked to the windows "disk defragmenter" service which I would presume is disabled as your running an ssd. You will have to enable the "disk defragmenter" service first or use a third party program.

I have been researching like crazy last 2 days and I read samsungs magician app does disable a service that stops resize working, seems tho the kind poster above me has told you its the defrag service so try enabling that temporarily to see if works.

Yes it's a Samsung 830 128gb. Now that you mention it... I'm pretty sure this happened after I used the Samsung Magician tool that came with the SSD. I'll check the program's settings and report back as soon as I can access my pc.

Reactivating the Windows Disk defragmenter service through the Samsung Magician tool allowed me to resize my partition again with Disk Management!

    Thanks a bunch. :)
