    User Profile Service won't start

    I've been trying to fix my wife's computer for a few days now. It all started with what seemed like a corrupted Windows update package, which resulted in Windows freezing at a blank screen before properly loading. I tried various FixIts from Microsoft and some even told me that the problem was windows update components that were broken and "fixed" them, but it still resulted in the blank screen after a couple restarts. After exhausting all of the options that I found, I tried a repair install with a Windows 7 SP1 install disk that I created from an iso.

    I let the repair do its thing while I went and watched some shows with my wife, but when I came back it was in Windows with a plain back background and very few items on the desktop. In the bottom right corner it says "This copy of Windows is not genuine". I can't get into the control panel, windows explorer, or most other programs. It gives an Explorer.exe error that says "The server process could not be started because the configured identity is incorrect. Check the username and password" whenever I try to open most things, with an extra string of code when I try to get into the control panel. "::{26EE0668-A00A-44D7-9371-BEB064C98683}

    I've been following various advice from others on these forums and other places on the internet to try to get the computer working and without success. The one thing that I can do is access the command prompt and I've become fairly adept at accessing things through it. I tried to create another user profile through the command prompt, but when I got into it, it had the same exact problems as the main one, except I couldn't even access the command prompt anymore in that profile. I tried the built-in administrator account and it had the same issue. I also tried going into regedit and looking at the profile list to set the state and RefCount to 0, which I did for the State (it was at 4), but RefCount didn't even exist. I tried to add it in and then set that to 0, but that also had no effect.

    So now I don't really know where to go. I don't want to make things worse than they already are, and I also don't want to do a clean install if I can help it, since I was foolish enough to not back things up before I did the repair install. Any suggestions?

    On a related note, I'm still trying to see if I can save my wife's files in case I get to the point where my only option is a clean install. I tried putting my usb drive to be read so I can transfer files onto it, but I don't know if it's possible to get the command prompt to recognize it. I just learned about diskpart, and I could get it to see the usb drive from it (it's disk 1), but I don't know how to get the command prompt to recognize it. It seems to only be recognized as a partition, rather than a volume, and so diskpart won't assign a drive to it...

    Hi Platypodes

    See if the link below will help you fix the User Profile Service won't start

    User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

    I tried to follow those steps earlier. There is no backup profile within the registry, and I don't know what would happen if I simply deleted the one that's in there, so I didn't want to try that. Any user profile that I add (through the command prompt, since my control panel isn't accessible) has the same errors, so there's no "good" profile for me to access. When I try to go into safe mode with F8 I get all the same errors as in my normal profile. I'm not entirely sure how to boot into safe mode through the Windows 7 install disk, though.

    Would trying another repair be a viable option or would that just make things worse?

    Ok, so I can bring up the command prompt through the install disk now. Do I use the bcdedit commands from there to get it into safe mode?

    Ok, I've tried that now. It gets me into safe mode with the same problems. It's no different than just going through F8. It still won't let me access anything and gives the User Profile Service won't load message at the bottom once it gets into Windows.
