    underpriviledged, unlucky?

Hi, I've got a feeling my drive is toast but before I junk it I'd like to hear some opinions...
    it's a WD800AAJS from 2007 used since then as a root drive in a Dell Dimension 4700 running XPSP3.
The drive failed a couple of days ago and I've been trying to recover data after placing it into a USB enclosure. Occasionally my W7/64 can see it in disk management, but it says it needs formatting and its file system is reported as RAW I've tried 3 different computers, same result. Also tried to load as an internal drive - system hanging). Often it does not see it at all.
I've been trying to format it in DOS but I'm told I have insufficient privileges even when I run cdm as an administrator (and get the C:\Windows\system32> prompt).
I don't know how to go any higher - is there a higher level?
    Thanks for your comments

If you format it you'll lose the data permanently.

Try burning to CD with WIndows Image Burner the Data Lifeguard Download, boot the CD run Extended CD scan. This and a full Disk Check on all partitions .

If it's still undetected by Explorer but seen by Partition Wizard Home Edition then running Check File System might bring it back to life enough to copy out the data.

If you are after file recovery then you can also try Photorec

Don't be put off by the name, it will recover any data on the drive. I have used this program myself in the past to recover data from a drive that windows point blank refuses to recognise. Simply download the file to your hard drive and save it, plug in the drive to recover through the drive enclosure and then run the program (No install needed).

    PhotoRec - CGSecurity

    Hope this helps!

Welcome Claudio to the windows 7 forums.

About the only recommendation that I can give is to check out Steve Gibson's spinrite program. It has saved me a couple of times. Not free but well worth it to save data that was not readable. check out GRC | Hard drive data recovery software

I don't have any financial interest, just a satisfied customer.
