    Bulk delete parts of filenames?

I have a lot of files (songs) which names are of the following type:

    xxxx - yyyy

Where x represents the artist's name and y represents the song's name. Now, I need a way to bulk edit these files so that everything left of the hyphen is removed and later on the hyphen itself so that the filenames only consist of the song's name.

Is there a way to bulk do this? I have over 660 songs.

    Introduction - Bulk Rename Utility

Maybe that utility does what you want.

    Or use these pointers:

Here is another renamer that works well:

Name It Your Way (NIYoW) - CNET Download.com

There is a certain learning curve with any renaming utility, so be prepared to play with it a while.

I'd recommend that you make copies of all of your songs and then rename the originals. If you make a complete mess of the originals, you can replace them with the copies.

Name It Your Way works like this:

You make one or more "rules" to apply to the selected files. The rule affects the name in some way. The effect of the rule can be previewed before it is applied. If the preview looks OK, you can then apply it. The effect of the rule can be undone if necessary.

Rules are made by choosing from a series of drop down menu choices.

You have an unusual case in which you presumably have a varying number of characters to be removed, depending on the length of the artist's name.

In the case of Bob Smith - Song.mp3, a rule removing 12 characters from the left edge would leave you with Song.mp3.

If you applied that same rule to Frank Sinatra - Song.mp3, you would be left with a - Song.mp3.

So you could apply the rule a second time after modifying it to remove another 4 characters from a - Song.mp3, which would leave you with Song.mp3.

If all the Frank Sinatra songs are in a single folder, you could make a rule removing 16 characters from the left edge, and that would leave you with a series of Song.mp3 files, done in a single pass. So, it can help if you have artists categorized by folders---but it's still doable if all songs are in a single folder.
