How to determine what program is creating a file

Every so often, I see the file debug.log appear in /Users/<me>/Documents. The file has a size of zero bytes. I delete it and it eventually reappears. I do not believe that this is virus related, but I would like to figure out what program is creating it. Can you please offer some suggestions.

    Thanks.

Right click on debug.log and select Properties for a clue maybe.

Golden - On occasion, yes. Next time I use it, I will see if that is the cause. Thx.

I ask because I stumbled upon this - debug.log isn't in same location as yours - but thought I might hazard a guess:

Good suggestion - I followed the instructions provided. I expect to use Google Voice this Thursday, we'll see if that resolves the issue.
