Ok, 4 months later...OMG where did the time go..and my COURTESY! I profusely apologize to you, F5ing, UserNameIssues, and lehnerUS2000 for my lack of response. I can only hope this somehow posts to the top of the list again in order to show the thread.

As I last wrote I was coming down w/my son's cold- which turned into pneumonia- which, through miscellaneous tests an ulcer was also discovered, as were sodium problems causing me high blood presssure- not to whine, but I was pre-ooccupied and so exhausted I did nothing but what was necessary for survival- haha which according to my cardio doc included eating SALT n VINEGAR POTATO CHIPS, a "med" I'm still on. So I forgot all about this until recently when going through some searches and still seeing all the goofy icons.

I re-read everything- all the advice you gave to me- and set up my folder options to hide these files, plus ran C-Cleaner. Still, they show up.

I AM FINALLY RECOVERING...and if you all will give me one more chance I PROMISE not to fall off a cliff again! The big problem I have with these file icons showing is that in going through all my files when doing a search, it's like trying to swim in a river with branches from a beaver underground blocking my way to where I want to end up, and it takes me two or three times longer to find the file I am looking for thank it should.

Since I've done the tasks you suggested, do you have any other ideas on how I can get rid of these files so they won't show in my searches any longer?

Again, I really really am sorry- I'd appreciate more help from you gurus, if willing. And I swear, unless hit by a hurricane or something, I WILL RESPOND 'til this issue is resolved (then I'll have another one, of course!)

    Thanks so much,
    Lissa

    Weird

Those files should vanish when you close the related program.
For example, "~$Jokes.doc" should disappear, when you close "Jokes.doc" in Word.

Perhaps your version of Office has developed a problem, or maybe it didn't install properly.
I'm betting that other members know more about the technical vagaries of Office installs (e.g. glitches and common problems).

Sounds like life has been a bit busy. Glad that you are doing better.

Let's try resetting the folder options:
(You might want to watch these videos in the full screen mode and at 720p.)

That should hide them from your view and searches.

It appears that your MS Word is ending abnormally, thus leaving temp files behind:

If you wish to remove the temp files:
Unhide them as shown in the video above.
Make a folder on your desktop named "delete-me".
    Close MS Word.
CUT the files that start with a tilde (~) from the folders where you see them.
PASTE those files into the folder on your desktop named "delete-me".
KEEP them around for a few months.
(to make sure that you did not accidentally move a file that was not a temp file)
DELETE the folder sometime this summer

    Thanks!

Hi- thanks so kindly for not kicking me to the curb after my four month slide! It's been a long day and I can't think any longer but tomorrow I'll get on in watching the videos and see what I can do with them. I really appreciate your help, and now I just hope I can get it done! Tonight? Just writing to let you know I did not disappear again!

    Thanks,

    Lisa

Ohhhh sigh, HI GUYS! I've read, read, watched, searched..whenever I've had a free moment. I've gone through some of the tutorials, can't find this problem there, and dang, I just can't figure this out. I did the unhide bit, which seemed to go ok (I hit "apply" and everything looked the same) but no box saying I chose to display protected files came up...also tried to find the WINDOWS TASK MANAGER but in video it was over and open on right side, but not not my computer...tried looking it up in Program Files...no luck.

Any chance someone can come in here and help me if I give you permission and you're one of the people who's been helping me already? Or let me call you and walk me through it...or something? I'm at a loss here.

Thanks, hope you're all having a great day. Now, onto my new search!

I've been awake too many hours to be of any use to you now. I'll just post to say that the video was to show how the temp files can be left behind if something kills Word. You do not want to be killing Word like that.

We will get you fixed up soon. Try to keep using your computer as you have been and don't spend too much time attempting to solve this issue on your own.

    You can:

    • Right click on the Taskbar and choose "Start Task Manager" from the context menu (see picture below)
    • Press "Ctrl + Shift + Esc"
    • Press "Ctrl + Alt + Del" and choose "Start Task Manager" from the list
    • Type "task manager" into the Start Menu search box (no quotes, case is no important)
