Re-Re-Visiting screen freezing, won't start, etc. Final Results!
After about two weeks of difficult times, dozens of failed starts and re-starts, BSOD's, clean reinstalls and finally a clean total install and countless hours of advice and help from the willing capable experts working this forum, and hours of following their advice and suffering only repeats of failures, I just gave up. I ordered a new Nvidia GeForce 8400 from a guy on ebay for $19. Four days later I installed it and now for four days I have not had one problem of any kind. This solution was suggested toward the end of my travail, and less than 20 bucks solved the lengthy problem.
Now I am finding joy in reinstalling just the things that I want and need, having gotten rid of more accumulated stuff than I could believe I had installed. It runs better and starts nearly immediately, as I have pared to the very minimum the programs needed to make it run.
Again, my many thanks to the great guys that did all they could to help me out of my original misery. If I had been even more specific describing the original problems I know I could have saved them and myself a lot of unnecessary effort.
I'm now a very happy guy.............and I sure hope it lasts. Roving
