Prevent applications from adjusting mic levels

Is it possible to lock the microphone level so that applications no longer are able to adjust its level?
Often with games that have in-game voice chat capability, you'll notice that they turn your microphone level up to 100. A small thing really, but sort of annoying when you have to revert it back, even though most of the time it's just once.

If it's the game that controls the mic level then that's where you need to look to override that setting!

I know, but that's not possible for me, it's hard coded into the games as far as I know. So I was wondering if you could tell windows to not give any other application permission to alter the microphone levels. I guess that's a no go?

I have no idea if this will work as it was originally for Vista but worth a try I should think;
Try Start -> Control Panel -> double-click Sound icon, then select Recording tag; Select your audio device and click Properties, select Levels tag, and adjust the Microphone level. Then go to Advanced tag, and clear the "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" from Exclusive Mode. restart the computer and test the issue.

Forgot to mention that that's indeed what I've had it set to for a while, no difference. No biggy, probably no way to prevent this from happening but that's alright.
