Does not boot unless i use the startup menu.

My pc switches on but doesn't boot. I normally just get a black screen with a flashing underscore in top left corner. I can get into the start up menu and then the boot menu and boot the pc that way. I have on the odd occasion received an error message, something about the keyboard, i cant remember exactly its been a while since i seen that message. I know nothing about taking a pc apart and testing hardware, so im hoping its a software issue. Any ideas?

Managed to reproduce the keyboard error, and that is literally all it says.. 'Keyboard error'

I really don't understand your getting into the boot menu and then the start menu statement. Are you going into the bios? Lets start off with two things.
    1. Filling in your ((My System Specs)) using User CP at the top of the page.
    2. With the computer off unplug every thing except your mouse. Boot your pc and let us know what happens. I'm thinking you have a keyboard error and the system is hanging up trying to get the keyboard to load. You could also try another keyboard.

I was filling in my specs as you wrote that. Though i don't know all the specs I put in what i do know.

After switching on I press escape repeatedly and i get a menu titled 'startup menu' then i hit f9 to access the 'boot menu' from there i can select the hard drive and the pc will boot correctly.

    Am trying your suggestion now.

Removed keyboard, same problem. Removed all other things connected (usb memory stick, speakers, ethernet cable) and it took me to the hp recovery manager. Just backing up files now and i will then go through the repair options. Any ideas what could have caused this problem?

I take you were using Ready Boost. Try this little program for spec and lots of other information.

No, I dont think I have ever enabled ready boost. I heard it doesn't really help very much. I will check on it next time I'm at my pc

Make sure the HD is set first to boot in BIOS setup.

If further problems, post back a screenshot of your maximized Disk Mgmt drive map and listings, using the Snipping Tool in Start menu.
