Need Partition help? Startup repair says no OS files found on disk.

After running startup repair, the details state the root cause to be "No OS files found on disk. Repair action: Partition table repair. Result: Failed. Error code = 0x3f8"

I have Partition Wizard and have a funny feeling that might help, but I'm not 100% sure how to use that software for this case.

Thank you.

offline defender couldn't start up - saying something about not being able to access the system files. i booted up with partition wizard and at first it kept stopping me, giving an error about not working on windows server (except i don't have windows server, i have windows 7 32b), but after i changed the boot order and hard booted, it came up and i rebuilt the MBR. the 100mb is set to active and the c: was also set to active (however it didn't say c: for the description....was just blank, but gave the correct filesizes for the drive). i am now in the process of startup repair x3, and it looks like this might take a while.

Is this your only HD or did you already unplug one? If so plug it back in and take another snap to post back. I'm wondering why there are no flags on what should be the OS partition. Have you done anything to it at all?

CLick on HD in PW to highlight it, from Disk tab select REbuild MBR, Apply. Does it start now?

If not try running Startup Repair 3 separate times with reboots the way it is.

i am giving you the new snapshot first, before i go and rebuild MBR again

It's very unusual there are no flags on the Win7 partition and hence no evidence it's even installed there. Did you do anything with the PW CD or otherwise that might have affected the OS?

So if you try to repair it with Rebuild followed by 3 Startup Repairs and it won't Repair, browse in with the rescue disk to see if you can rescue your files. If so then you might want to try more of the steps in Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot. If not you can skip to Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

i might have used the move/resize partition command, but not sure exactly what - if any - steps were taken. this was when the issue originally happened....which was again very odd. computer was up and running, when i came back from my shower, i had an error on the screen and i have attached a snapshot of it.

hey look man, there's a difference between being reckless and being curious, but i don't think i actually did anything with the "move/resize" option. i used it before on a similar situation, but this time i'm pretty sure i stopped short of dragging the ends. one thing i will say is that when i browse the directory with pw, i can see the windows folder and its files. i tried rebuild MBR earlier in the posts, but let me try it again. about how long should the repair option take? also, what about the "set windows boot partition" option for the system reserved or my c:? what does that do?

At this point in your request for help, only one person has replied. So, I wouldn't be too quick to use the "hey look man" attitude, but that's just me.

well he called me reckless!

I agree, but he's not asking you for help. I just find it a better choice to be a little humble when requesting assistance. As I said before, that's just me.

What's arrogant about asking (not telling) you if not remembering what random changes you made to your partititioning is at all reckless?

Even if our work here has made these forums the top one on the web, we are volunteers and do not need to put up with anything other than grateful thanks for our help.

yeah, well i would be grateful if your steps actually worked, but all you have done is given me canned instructions and implied that i am some kind of reckless idiot, when i even told you i didn't think i made any changes - i only looked at that area of pw. i'm not reckless. i'm not afraid to try things, but i'm hesitant when doing so. i'm very good with computers, but recovery is not my forte. you seem like you have some knowledge, but i think this problem has you stumped and if your forums are so good, why are you the only person that has replied. ISN'T THERE ANYBODY ELSE OUT THERE THAT CAN HELP????

I gave you a long list of steps in Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot to follow which assures everything is done to start Win7, then asked you several times about specific steps to see if you'd run them and got no response. Then you have the gall to complain that it isn't fixed yet. Is this a prank thread?

No one else is helping you because of your behavior which had better change quick or the moderators will send you tumbling into outer space.

I am still waiting for reply to my questions before you started whining about being "called reckless":

Have you tried Rebuild MBR yet? If it then won't start did you run Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times?

I gave you other steps to browse into C to see if you see your files or even a Windows folder. Use Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console or Paragon rescue disk to recover data

We had barely gotten started. The initial Startup Repair in your original post questions if you still even have an OS, which is confirmed by no flags on C in your PW drive map.

So if no Windows folder is seen when browsing in, there is in Step 8 a Partition Recovery wizard to find and replace C, or Disk Genius to rebuild a missing Partition Table if the OS is present but doesn't respond to all repairs.

But we haven't gotten there yet because you had a tempy tantrum.
