Windows 7: System Tray Icon Pop-Ups Disappear When Mouse Gets Near

System Tray Icon Pop-Ups Disappear When Mouse Gets Near

I can click on an icon in the system tray, and the pop-up appears correctly (for example, clicking on the volume icon, the volume control appears).

However, as soon as I move the mouse pointer towards the pop-up, the pop-up vanishes.

I've tried looking for an existing answer to this on the forum, without luck so far.

Can anyone help?

Many Thanks...

Hello Rossi, and welcome to Seven Forums.

As a test to see if it may just be a temporary glitch, restart the computer and try again.

Hello Brink,
Many thanks for your help. The re-boot didn't fix it unfortunately. It's on a new laptop, which was working prior to loading a fresh batch of Windows updates. I've read elsewhere on the forum this can happen, but I guess the fix isn't so universal.

No worries, we'll just need to go down the list of common things to try for this.

Next, is to try resetting the notification area icons.

The problem's still there, but I've noticed that if I click on the system tray icon and then move to the pop-up very quickly, it works. Is there an adjustment for the duration the pop-up remains on screen?

Yes, but usually 5 seconds is the default.

You might also run a sfc /scannow command to see if there may be a corrupted system file responsible.

If that doesn't help, then you might consider doing a system restore using a restore point (if available) dated before these updates were installed to see if that helps. Afterwards, reinstall only 1 update at a time to see if one is revealed as the cause.
