If its just the sound portion of the motherboard that has been damaged (assuming that is the problem), you could install a sound card and use that instead of the built in sound. That would be less expensive than replacing the motherboard.
WEll I'm thinking of just getting a whole new computer since mine is from 2004 anyways and is pretty outdated
