Win7 x64 laptop randomly stops responding with busy cursor shown

Hi, I just bought this ASUS laptop about 3 months ago and ever since then have been facing this problem and I'm unable to fix it.

The computer will stop responding, the cursor shows the busy blue ring (spinning, not frozen), and I can still move the blue ring around, but unable to click on anything. CTRL+ALT+DEL doesn't work, nothing works. Tried leaving it overnight but it didn't solve the problem. I had to force shut down by holding the Power button.

This problem happens at random times, while using random applications, online or not, sometimes within a few minutes after turning on the computer, sometimes hours, but it happens almost every time. I have also tried turning on the computer and left it without using anything, and the same problem will happen.

Has anyone experienced the same issue and solved it?

Any help is very much appreciated.

    Thanks!

Have you talked to ASUS? If it's that new it's still under warranty so they should be responsible for fixing it as this is certainly not normal behavior.

No I have not go to them yet, although I have plans to do so, probably within next few weeks when I have the time. I guess if I can fix it, it saves me time to go to ASUS.

Work through these steps to Clean Up Factory Bloatware
to see if they solve the problem.

If not then work through these Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7.

Many tech enthusiasts prefer to Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 to shed the factory bloatware and useless factory utilities that have better versions built into Win7.

Hi I've tried the above steps (although frankly I don't understand some of them), but the problem persists. I actually suspected it's AVG but couldn't bring myself to believe it because the same AVG works fine for my office computer running the same OS, as well as my girlfriend's office PC. Finally I've decided to give up on AVG and fully uninstalled it, then replaced it with Avira.

Guess what, 24 hours passed, and the problem did not recur. I'm crossing my fingers now, hopefully the problem is finally gone.

No one has every recommended AVG here, since it bloated up and ruined the free edition about 5 years ago and Win7 has only been around 3 years.

Avast Free appears to be following a similar sad path with it's gadget and gimmicks you can only uninstall by Repairing the program in Control Panel. This level of tricky deceit has lost them many supporters here, so that the regular recommendation from most here is only for Microsoft Security Essentials.
