Greg,
OP has done both ways. This time with nothing additional other than the normal ms updates.

I wish that one shoe would fit all feet.

Was the HD wiped?

As suggested earlier by TVeblen have you tried defaulting in BIOS to onboard video while disabling or unplugging video card, to see if problem persists?

Work with him as he is very good with hardware troubleshooting.

Have you also tested RAM - Test with Memtest86+ for 5-6 passes or overnight to stress it? This is crucial.

I would also test the HD with the maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan followed by Disk Check.

If these hardware elements pass muster then I would test CPU - Stress Test with Prime95 - Windows 7 Forums which will complete hardware testing.
