How to get back the remove insertable media icon I just tried charging my Ipod Classic and Ipod Touch from my Vaio. Having had nothing but bad experiences with apple software I have chosen to keep my Windows 7 platform an Apple free zone.
It worked OK but the dang iPod Touch has changed some of my settings!
I normally use the remove media icon in the little window that opens up from the little white triangle in the bottom right, but now it's not there! Instead it comes up on the task bar when I insert something.
not a major problem, but still I am not happy about it, certainly when I've had this machine running problem free since I got it. I don't want apple introducing problems into my new computer. I have enough problems with my Macbook as it is.
How do I get this back then? I tried going into cutomize and choosing show icon and modifications, but that just makes it come up on the taskbar. Maybe that's better. Either way not happy and want things to go back to the way they were.
p.s. Apple sucks | My System Specs |

No guarantees but you might try System Restore to return your computer to a date/time prior to charging the iPod Touch. Warning A System Restore will also uninstall programs and drivers that were installed after the date of the selected restore point. System Restore
Another long shot, but you could also try rebuilding your icon cache. Icon Cache - Rebuild
And an even longer shot is to run a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) It will look for damaged or corrupt system files. If problems are found run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan. I think marsmimar is taking this a bit too far.
From the customize panel (the same you used to set "show icon and modifications") you can also choose "hide icon and notifications" if you want it to shut up and ALWAYS stay in the hidden icon window.
Which seems to be the original setting before apple stuff did its magic.

Do you have any removable devices connected when the icon is not displayed ?
If not, attach a device such as a USB flash drive and see if the icon shows up. | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number home built OS Win 7 Pro x64 SP1, Win 7 Ult x86 SP1 CPU AMD Athlon II x4 620 Motherboard Gigabyte GA-MA785G-UD3H Memory 6GB GSkill DDR2 800 Graphics Card AMD 4670 GPU + AMD 4200 IGP Sound Card on board Realtek ALC889A Monitor(s) Displays RCA 40" LCD TV, Insignia 32" LCD TV, HP 15" LCD monitor Screen Resolution 1680 x 1050... Thanks for the replies guys I meant to get back on this, I sorted it out in the end. No problems (I hope) Don't like it when stuff messes with my set up. Is there any way to stop devices automatically installing drivers on your computer? I only want to use the USB port to charge my iPod up from my VAIO.
Marsimar- first thing I did was a sfc /scannow and it didn't throw up any problems. Also used CCleaner. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number SONY VAIO PCG-81312M OS Windows 7 Home Premium 64 CPU Intel Core i7-2630QM Memory 4GB Graphics Card NVidia GeForce with Cuda Hard Drives Hitachi 500GB |

Tell us if it works. According to the OP's original post: Quote: I normally use the remove media icon in the little window that opens up from the little white triangle in the bottom right, but now it's not there! Instead it comes up on the task bar when I insert something. I was simply trying to offer some additional options to get the icon back to where it originally was. My sincerest apologies, bobafetthotmail, for "...taking this a bit too far." I certainly didn't mean to offend your sensibilities. | My System Specs | | Computer type Laptop System Manufacturer/Model Number Sony Vaio VPCEB47GM Laptop OS Win 7 Pro 64-bit CPU Intel i5 2.4 Ghz Memory 8GB DDR3 Graphics Card Intel HD 3000 Sound Card IDT High Definition Monitor(s) Displays 15.6 WGXA Anti-Glare LED Screen Resolution 1280x800 Hard Drives 640Gb 7200rpm Antivirus MSE Browser Opera (primary) with IE9 backup |
