Cannot Log Off or Restart

I have Win 7 Pro on a Thinkpad T510 and I updated the Avast engine. It asked for me to restart the computer. It progressed as far as the "Logging off" screen an stopped. I have manually stopped the computer with the power button but when I power it back on I go to the same "Logging off" screen. I have a restore point but can't get to it unless I can start up the computer at least in Safe Mode. Unfortunately I don't have a boot disk. After years of computing this may be the first time I have needed one. Any help would be much appreciated.

You can use the disk to repair windows then your machine might be right

I don't have a disk for the OS. An update is that after numerous power down power up cycles, all of which sent me directly to the Logging off screen, the computer finally booted up when I powered up. I then got a message popping up that several Microsoft updates had been installed. I downloaded them the day before but didn't restart the computer. Now I am wondering if I should restore to an earlier point just in case I caused a problem by powering down and up during the Win update process. I waited 30+ minutes before doing so, so I feel that the process must have been completed. Any help would be appreciated.

you can using from power option setting maybe it fixing or should deleted files downloaded windows update,if it not true!
may you have a process Intruder in own os.

do you have a antivirus force?

I will run my anti-malware and anti-virus programs to check. I run them regularly and find no problems. After thinking about it more, I wonder if the combination of installing Avast engine update which required a restart and Microsoft updates which required a restart might be the problem. I did both with one restart. Could the Microsoft updates and Avast update have conflicted?

hi walker,
no it way for solving it problem,you first should to disable the windows update and checking gpedit.msc windows service that it service will show to you that can see if Manipulation in power option setting

I will continue to update Win 7 and hope I don't have the problem again. I hoped that someone with a similar experience might comment, especially regarding both Avast and Windows Updates being installed on the same computer restart. I have taken precautions now and have made a boot disk which I did not have before. It hopefully will give me another way into the computer if I am stuck again. I have restore points that I could employ but like any major operation there could a downside. So I will hold off on restoring unless it is proven necessary.

No. Once it got it to boot the computer runs normally. The Microsoft Updates show to have been installe as well as the Avast update. I have been able to power down and power up successfully.

To help keep you out of such problems I would recommend removing Avast and installing MSE.
