Win 7 64 bit home

Greg,
I am unable to run malware bytes. When window starts up, normally or in safe mode, the win 7 screen appears ( sometimes with an error message that a .dll file is missing, sometimes not) but non of the desktop icons work. When I go to the windows icon in the lower left corner I just get the blue spinnin circle. Nothing works.

I will run the tests you recommended this evening. The drive with windows on it is detects in the bios. The dell diagnostics software dected and tested the drive ( a sdd drive) and it tested ok.

I will also disconnect my other 2 internal data drives and try the scndsk and chkdsk again.

I would unplug the two other drives if there is any problem with the boot loader(BCD Store) and boot files ending up on the wrong drive. Here the pair of Sata III drives are seen as Disk 0 and Disk 1 yet the 7 installer will go after the first Sata II drive meaning any custom install of anything to the second Sata II requires the first to be unplugged.

Once you have gone through the guides gregrocker has pointed you to and still find nothing is working being the last resort time arriving and you already knowing the rest regarding a full clean install start backing up anything you want from C and blast C clean to start over again. If the Check Disk tool stalls when being run while booted live from the 7 dvd you will know then the problems are too extensive.

And by the way Scandisk was replaced in Vista with the Check Disk tool simply being the same but under the new name for the same tool. Memtest if you haven't run that lately would also be advised in case you have a bad dimm or two causing the locks. Bad ram will trash everything! You can download the live cd version of memtest as well as the option for a bootable memtest flash drive from Memtest86 - Download Page
